Statutory notice period
The minimum notice an employer must give. Contracts and collective agreements can lengthen it and only rarely shorten it, and the tenure bands are where cross-border assumptions usually go wrong.
Employer notice under the Employment Contracts Act, unless a collective agreement sets other periods. The employee's own notice is fourteen days, rising to one month after five years of service.
| Service | Employer notice | Runs |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1 year of service | 14 days | runs from the day after notice is given |
| More than 1 and up to 4 years | 1 month | same rule |
| More than 4 and up to 8 years | 2 months | same rule |
| More than 8 and up to 12 years | 4 months | same rule |
| More than 12 years | 6 months | same rule |
The parties may agree different periods, capped at six months, and the employee's period may never exceed the employer's.

Minimum paid annual leave
The statutory floor for paid holiday. The counting basis matters as much as the number, since some laws count a six-day week and others count working days or calendar weeks.
30 working days per year, counted on a six-day week, equivalent to 25 days on a five-day week.
Leave accrues at two and a half weekdays per full accrual month once the employment has run a year by the end of the credit year, which spans April to March; in the first year the rate is two days a month, giving twenty-four. A weekday here counts every day but Sundays and church holidays, so Saturdays consume leave and a full week costs six days.

Probation limit
The longest trial period the law allows an employer to agree, together with the notice that applies while it runs.
6 months at most, with notice of none; during the trial either side may dissolve the contract with immediate effect, though not on discriminatory or extraneous grounds during it.
Agreed at the start of employment, at most six months. In a fixed-term contract the trial may cover at most half the contract term.
The employer may extend the trial month for month where long absence through sickness or family leave falls inside it.

Employer social contributions
What the employer pays on top of gross salary into statutory schemes. Some countries charge a percentage of pay, others charge flat amounts, and a single headline rate hides caps, regional rules and industry-rated items.
